Our Farm

The FARM is located in the Skagit Valley north of Sedro-Woolley on highway 9. We lease space on 10 acres with a metal fabrication business and a ceramics studio. In 2013 I visited the property and saw an old greenhouse with 5 foot tall weeds, no end walls, and all the potential I was looking for. The greenhouse has been completely transformed. It houses our incubation rooms , the flow hood and inoculation space as well as a general workspace. The neighboring welders and I built our steam sterilizer together. A retired shipping container was brought in and has been heavily modified into the Shiitake fruiting room. We have come a long way, and are continually evolving to make room for growth and expansion of our mushroom varieties.

our Story

Like most passions that turn from dreams to reality, its hard to trace a concrete course. SGM founder Mark Rickard does recall countless hikes in forests across the states with his mother who is a plant pathologist. She lovingly shared, sometimes too much, her detailed grasp of the natural world. Plant knowledge, gardening, tree pruning, and landscaping became some of Mark’s outlets. As a classically trained pianist he also knows the value of blending technical with art. A certainty in his life was spending as little time indoors as possible and a deep and burgeoning interest in the farm to table movement.

So, somewhere in all this, the world of micro-farming was discovered and Skagit Gourmet Mushrooms was created. And not even close to overnight. After hundreds of plans, thousands of hours of labor, bad ideas, good ideas, revised good ideas, enormous support from family, most importantly his wife and 2 1/2 year old (who just happens to love mushrooms), SGM started production and hasn’t looked back.
SGM now takes great joy in offering an exceptional product to the Pacific Northwest where we thrive. Dedication to sustainable organic practices that enrich the earth will always be our priority; followed by the pleasure of delicious gourmet mushroom-centric meals.
